#
# Auto-merge behaviour:
# - This file is merged with `docker-compose.yml` only when a Makefile
# target passes it explicitly (`-f docker-compose.dev.yml`); it is the
#     contributor convenience layer โ€” `make dev`, `make cli-dev`, the
# benchmark harness pick it up via the COMPOSE_DEV/COMPOSE_WATCH vars.
# - The OSS installer (`scripts/install.sh`) does NOT download this
# file, so end users running the launcher (`decepticon start`) get
#     only the base `docker-compose.yml` from `~/.decepticon/`.
#
# Skills now ship as package data under `decepticon/skills/` and are baked
# into the LANGGRAPH image via `COPY decepticon/` (resolved in-process by
# `decepticon/backends/__init__.py:SKILLS_LOCAL_PATH`). On a repo dev clone
# (`make dev`) skill edits are hot-reloaded by the `./decepticon` sync in
# `docker-compose.watch.yml` โ€” no dedicated `./skills` bind is needed (the
# old root `./skills/` directory no longer exists).
#
# Where to put YOUR overrides depends on which stack you are running:
#   - **Launcher / OSS install** (`decepticon start`): drop a
#     `docker-compose.override.yml` into `~/.decepticon/`.
# - **Repo dev clone** (`make dev`): add langgraph overrides below.
#

Decepticon โ€” Autonomous Red Team Agent

Install

Prerequisites: Docker and Docker Compose v2.
Supported on macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux (amd64 + arm64), and Windows (amd64 + arm64) โ€” native via PowerShell or via WSL2 (Ubuntu / Kali).

macOS / Linux / WSL2

bash
curl -fsSL https://decepticon.red/install | bash
decepticon onboard # Interactive setup wizard (provider, API key, model profile)
decepticon # Start the core stack and drop into the terminal CLI

The default start brings up the core management plane (LiteLLM, PostgreSQL, Neo4j, Skillogy, LangGraph, sandbox) and launches the terminal CLI. Specialist workloads (BloodHound CE, Sliver C2, Ghidra MCP, โ€ฆ) and the web dashboard come up on demand โ€” the orchestrator spawns specialists via ops_start("ad") etc., and you bring up the dashboard from inside the CLI with /web (see Web Dashboard).

Windows (PowerShell, native)

โ†’ Quick start ยท Full setup walkthrough

Use as a library (pip)

Building on top of the agents โ€” a product, a research integration, or a custom orchestrator? Install the SDK from PyPI:

bash
pip install decepticon # core SDK
pip install "decepticon[neo4j]"     # + the knowledge-graph attack-chain tools

decepticon is a client SDK: it ships the agent factories, middleware, tools, and skills, and routes LLM calls and sandbox execution to runtime services over HTTP (DECEPTICON_LLM__PROXY_URL, SANDBOX_URL). Running agents still needs those services โ€” use the Docker stack above, or point the URLs at your own equivalents. See Decepticon as a library for the factory override surface, declarative PluginBundle plugins, and the safety gate.

๐Ÿ’– Support Decepticon

We're building Decepticon toward an Offensive Vaccine for the AI-driven threat landscape. If you believe in autonomous red teaming as a path to stronger defense, consider supporting the project.

What is Decepticon?

The "AI + hacking" space is full of demos that run nmap and print a report. That's not what this is.

Decepticon is a professional autonomous Red Team agent. It executes realistic attack chains โ€” reconnaissance, exploitation, privilege escalation, lateral movement, C2 โ€” the way a real adversary would, not the way a scanner does.

But more importantly: it operates under the discipline that separates red teamers from script kiddies. Before a single packet leaves the wire, Decepticon generates a complete engagement package โ€” RoE, ConOps, Deconfliction Plan, and OPPLAN with MITRE ATT&CK mapping โ€” and every action runs inside those defined rules.

โ†’ Engagement workflow deep dive

Why Decepticon?

Real kill chains, not checkbox scans. Decepticon reads an OPPLAN and pursues objectives through whatever path opens up โ€” pivoting, adapting, chaining techniques.

Interactive shells, actually. Real offensive tools are interactive (msfconsole, sliver-client, evil-winrm). Decepticon runs every command inside persistent tmux sessions with automatic prompt detection โ€” so when a tool drops into an interactive prompt, the agent sends follow-up commands without workarounds.

Hardened sandbox isolation. All commands run inside a Kali Linux sandbox on a dedicated operational network (sandbox-net), separate from the management plane (decepticon-net). LangGraph drives the sandbox via the Docker socket. โ†’ Architecture

Offense serves defense. The planned Offensive Vaccine loop will turn findings into defense improvements through an attack โ†’ defend โ†’ verify cycle.

Architecture

Two-network design. The always-on management plane (LiteLLM, PostgreSQL, Skillogy, LangGraph) and the always-on sandbox plane stay up across the whole engagement; everything else is dynamic-spawn โ€” the Web dashboard comes up on /web from the CLI, and specialist workloads (BloodHound CE, Sliver C2, Ghidra MCP, โ€ฆ) come up only when the orchestrator calls ops_start(...) (see ADR-0006). Networks: management on decepticon-net; sandbox + C2 server + targets on sandbox-net. Neo4j is dual-homed so the agent (on management) can persist findings written from inside the sandbox.

โ†’ Architecture deep dive ยท Knowledge graph

Agents

16 specialist agents organized by kill chain phase, with a fresh context window per objective โ€” no accumulated noise.

Orchestration ยท Reconnaissance ยท Exploitation ยท Post-Exploitation ยท Vulnerability Research ยท Domain Specialists (AD, Cloud, Smart Contracts, Reversing, Analyst).

โ†’ Full agent roster and middleware stack

Models & Providers

Tier-based, credentials-aware fallback chain. You declare which credentials you have in priority order; Decepticon builds the primaryโ†’fallback chain at every tier from there.

Profile Tier per agent Use case
eco (default) Per-agent (HIGH for orchestrator/exploiter/patcher/analyst, MID for execution, LOW for recon/soundwave) Production
max Every agent on HIGH High-value targets
test Every agent on LOW Development / CI

Tier-mapped providers: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, MiniMax, DeepSeek, xAI, Mistral, OpenRouter, Nvidia NIM, Ollama (local).
Subscription OAuth: Claude Max/Pro/Team, ChatGPT Pro/Plus/Team, Gemini Advanced, Copilot Pro, SuperGrok, Perplexity Pro.

Configure via decepticon onboard. โ†’ Full model reference & fallback examples

Decepticon โ€” XBOW Validation Benchmark Passes

Confirmed flag captures on the XBOW validation benchmarks, grouped by difficulty. Each row links to the per-challenge evidence folder; the Trace column links to a public LangSmith trace of the winning run so you can re-trace every command the agent issued.

  • Mode โ€” black-box (no source code, no config, no service internals) with the per-challenge Vulnerability tags: provided to the agent as a hint โ€” the same metadata that xbow-engineering/validation-benchmarks ships in each challenge's benchmark.yaml. The agent discovers endpoints, parameters, sinks, payloads, and gadgets on its own; the tags only narrow the attack-class search space.
  • Status โ€” cycle-4 final ยท 102 / 104 (98.08 %) across all three levels.
  • Comparison vs other agents โ€” docs/benchmark-comparison.md.

Benchmark Framework

Modular benchmark framework for the Decepticon main agent.
Drives the full pipeline (OPPLAN approval โ†’ sub-agent delegation โ†’ flag
capture) against CTF-style challenges and produces per-run evidence
plus an aggregate report. The default provider wraps the XBOW
validation-benchmarks suite; additional providers can be plugged in by
implementing BaseBenchmarkProvider. A second provider in this branch
drives the ExploitBench V8 ladder โ€” see
README-exploitbench.md for the operator
guide and EXPLOITBENCH-GAINS.md for the
motivation.

Prerequisites

  • Docker + Docker Compose

  • uv (Python package manager)

  • The XBOW benchmarks submodule:

    bash
    git submodule add https://github.com/PurpleAILAB/xbow-validation-benchmarks \
        benchmark/xbow-validation-benchmarks
    git submodule update --init
  • A reachable LangGraph server. Default URL is http://localhost:2024
    (BenchmarkConfig.langgraph_url).

  • The langgraph container must be started in benchmark mode
    (BENCHMARK_MODE=1 in its env) so EngagementContextMiddleware
    injects the per-challenge target / tags / flag-format / mission-brief
    on every model call.

Run

bash
# Run the full suite with defaults
make benchmark

# Pass arbitrary CLI flags
make benchmark ARGS="--level 1 --batch-size 5"

Direct invocation

bash
# python -m form
uv run python -m benchmark.runner run

# Module-as-script form
uv run python -m benchmark

CLI options

Flag Short Description Default
--level -l Difficulty filter (1-3); repeat for multiple all
--tags -t Vulnerability tag filter (e.g. sqli, xss); repeat for multiple all
--ids Explicit challenge IDs; repeat or comma-separated (e.g. XBEN-001-24,XBEN-034-24) none
--range-start Start index, 1-based from start
--range-end End index, 1-based, inclusive to end
--batch-size -b Reporting batch size 10
--timeout Per-challenge timeout, seconds 1800 (30 min)
--parallel -p Max concurrent challenges (1 = sequential) 1
--provider Provider: xbow (default), exploitbench, mhbench, cybench (guide), or cybergym (guide) xbow
--exploitbench-config Path to an ExploitBench-style YAML spec (required when --provider exploitbench) none
--exploitbench-bridge Stdioโ†’TCP MCP bridge runtime: mcp-proxy (default) or socat mcp-proxy

Examples

bash
# Level-1 only
make benchmark ARGS="--level 1"

# Only SQL-injection-tagged challenges
make benchmark ARGS="--tags sqli"

# Levels 1 + 2
make benchmark ARGS="--level 1 --level 2"

# Three specific challenges by ID
make benchmark ARGS="--ids XBEN-034-24,XBEN-084-24,XBEN-095-24"

# Index range (challenges 1..10 in load order)
make benchmark ARGS="--range-start 1 --range-end 10"

# Run 5 challenges in parallel with a tighter timeout
make benchmark ARGS="--parallel 5 --timeout 1200"

The runner sends back exit code 1 if any challenge failed and 0
if all passed.

Per-challenge flow

For each challenge the harness runs:

text
1. provider.setup(challenge)
       make build (with NO_CACHE=1 retry on failure) + make run
       discover published ports via `docker compose ps`
       TCP pre-flight on every published port (early-abort if a port
         never opens โ€” saves the agent from being dispatched against
         a dead target)
       HTTP readiness probe on the primary port (best-effort)

2. harness._invoke_agent(challenge, target_url, ...)
       reset sandbox container (full restart per user policy โ€” keeps
         tmux sessions / leaked python procs from cascading across
         challenges)
       create LangGraph thread + run via langgraph_sdk
       poll run status to terminal; emit heartbeat log lines
         when status is unchanged for an extended interval
       on timeout / unexpected exception: cancel + verify-terminal,
         escalate to a langgraph container restart if the run does
         not reach terminal within the cancel deadline; capture
         postmortem state (agent_summary, trace_id, token_count)
         BEFORE clearing active IDs

3. provider.evaluate(challenge, state, workspace)
       grep the agent's emitted output for `FLAG{<hex>}`
       compare against the expected per-challenge flag

4. provider.teardown(challenge)
       `docker compose down -v` (always runs, in `finally`)
       remove the `.xben_build_done` guard so the next run rebuilds

The harness uses cancel + verify-terminal discipline so containers
are not torn down while a graph node is still issuing requests at the
target โ€” that pattern produces "connection refused" errors that
contaminate observer evidence on the next cycle.

Scoring

  • Binary outcome per challenge: flag captured against the expected
    value = pass; anything else = fail.
  • Expected flag format: FLAG{sha256(CHALLENGE_ID.upper())}.
  • Aggregation: overall pass rate plus breakdowns by level and by tag
    (see scorer.py).

Output layout

benchmark/results/
  <challenge_id>/ # one dir per challenge, persistent
    / # one wrapper per execution
      report.json                       # full ChallengeResult dump
      report.md                         # human-readable evidence card
      evidence/
        summary.json                    # legacy alias of report.json
        summary.md                      # legacy alias of report.md
    /                    # subsequent runs accumulate
    ...
  batch-/ # one dir per Reporter instance
    report.json                         # BenchmarkReport aggregate
    report.md                           # markdown table aggregate
    index.json                          # cross-reference of per-challenge paths

Re-running the same challenge appends a new /
sub-directory under results//; prior runs stay intact so the
OCI loop's observer can compare across cycles.

ChallengeResult carries the full evidence payload, including:

Field Purpose
passed, flag_captured Outcome
duration_seconds, setup_seconds Wall-clock totals (setup excluded from duration)
trace_id LangSmith trace identifier (= LangGraph run_id)
token_count Tokens consumed by the run
agent_summary First chunk of the final agent message
cancel_outcome One of clean, soft_cancelled, rollback, container_restart, failed
terminal_status_at_teardown LangGraph run status observed before teardown
error Surfaced exception text on failure paths

Adding a provider

Implement BaseBenchmarkProvider:

python
from pathlib import Path
from benchmark.providers.base import BaseBenchmarkProvider
from benchmark.schemas import (
    Challenge, ChallengeResult, FilterConfig, SetupResult,
)
from benchmark.state import BenchmarkRunState

class MyProvider(BaseBenchmarkProvider):
    @property
    def name(self) -> str:
        return "my-benchmark"

    def load_challenges(self, filters: FilterConfig) -> list[Challenge]:
        ...

    def setup(self, challenge: Challenge) -> SetupResult:
        ...

    def evaluate(
        self,
        challenge: Challenge,
        state: BenchmarkRunState,
        workspace: Path,
    ) -> ChallengeResult:
        ...

    def teardown(self, challenge: Challenge) -> None:
        ...

Wire it in runner.py (or pass to Harness directly when scripting).

Tests

bash
# Unit tests (no Docker required โ€” everything is mocked)
uv run pytest tests/unit/benchmark/ -v

# Lint + format
uv run ruff check benchmark/ tests/unit/benchmark/
uv run ruff format --check benchmark/ tests/unit/benchmark/
