1. Project Overview & Quickstart (Homebrew/homebrew-core)

Homebrew Core

Core formulae for the Homebrew package manager.

Homebrew/discussions (forum)

How do I install these formulae?

Just brew install <formula>. This is the default tap for Homebrew and is installed by default.

More Documentation, Troubleshooting, Contributing, Security, Community, Donations, License and Sponsors

See these sections in Homebrew/brew's README.

Translations

GitHub Pull Request

If you want to add a new translation, follow these steps:

  1. Copy index_fr.html to index_{langcode}.html and update its lang and permalink values.
  2. Copy _data/locales/en.yml to _data/locales/{langcode}.yml and update its initial language code.
  3. Change the values of the English strings to the new, translated language strings.

You can see the translated webpage by running bundle install and bundle exec jekyll serve. Then, open
http://localhost:4000/ and switch to your language.

File: AGENTS.md

Website content

  • Reread relevant files and git diff before editing; keep changes small and preserve user edits.
  • Update every _data/locales/ file when changing shared text, preserving HTML, URLs, commands, product names and paths in translations.
  • Keep CLAUDE.md as a relative symlink to AGENTS.md and exclude both from Jekyll output.

Release notes

Research

  • Use recent release posts as style references, not content templates. Read PR bodies and code changes, especially odeprecated, odisabled and command parsers, before describing behaviour or replacements.
  • Prefer bulk GitHub GraphQL queries; fall back to public REST and patches. Organisation discussions belong to the Homebrew/discussions repository.
  • Account for every supplied PR in exhaustive drafts. Group related changes; omit maintenance fixes, reverted changes or follow-up fixes only when authorised. Preserve existing links during restructuring.
  • For incremental reviews, record the highest reviewed PR number and latest merge timestamp outside the post; include lower-numbered PRs merged later.
  • Verify advisories, support schedules, branch transitions and application availability against code and prior announcements. Respect the user's publication-time assumptions and distinguish completed work from plans.

Writing and structure

  • Explain final behaviour and its user benefit. Use UK spelling, no em dashes or Oxford commas; avoid second-person wording, filler and unnecessary implementation details.
  • Open with a short announcement, at most five significant changes with positive news first, then a fuller summary. Keep upgrade actions prominent and use {:toc} instead of manual quick links.
  • Group shared changes under all users; separate platform-specific changes, non-default prefixes, security tooling, CI and tap-maintainer guidance. Keep migrations with their audience and give each behaviour one main home.
  • Start substantive sections with one to three summary sentences and aim for three to 25 bullets. Combine small sections rather than adding filler. Keep acknowledgements, funding and community news in Finally with an emoji.
  • Use - [User-focused sentence.](URL) for single-PR bullets; combine related PRs with links on relevant clauses. Name new commands, flags, environment variables and DSLs explicitly in backticks.
  • Order command-led bullets, then environment variables, then prose. Rank commands by their parent command's event count in one 90-day analytics snapshot per pass; preserve ties and place unreported commands last. Record the snapshot dates outside the post.

Migrations and security

  • Use aligned Markdown tables with interface, status, timing and replacement columns. Sort from Now to latest date, using YYYY-MM-DD; distinguish deprecated warnings, disabled use and removed code. Name the replacement or state there is none.
  • Use third-party tap dates for maintainer migrations and explain official-tap enforcement separately. State agreed dates directly and put staged rollout status in its own paragraph.
  • Distinguish loss of support or new bottles from software ceasing to run. Link prior announcements and maintained migration targets; recommend action releases or full SHAs where applicable.
  • Lead Security with one concise bullet per advisory: identifier, severity, affected behaviour and fixed release. Explain sandbox protections and limitations accurately, including optional-kernel fallbacks and compatibility trade-offs.
  • Verify platform limits and staged features from code. Explain installation improvements separately from author migration details; avoid universal performance claims from individual benchmarks.

Verification

  • Keep redirect_from: /blog/<version>/. Use _config.test.yml for future-dated posts and local links.
  • Run ./bin/jekyll build --config _config.yml,_config.test.yml, bundle exec rake test and vale --config="$(brew --repository)"/.vale.ini _posts/ when available.
