## File: CLAUDE.md

# CLAUDE.md

This file provides guidance to Claude Code (claude.ai/code) when working with code in this repository.

## Part of `personal-os`

This repo is a satellite of [`personal-os`](file:///Users/jmattiello/Workspace/personal-os) at `~/Workspace/personal-os`. A fresh agent session here should read `personal-os/AGENTS.md` first for shared conventions:

- **`VOICE.md`** — voice rules for any public-facing prose (marketing copy on this site falls under it).
- **`decisions/`** — cross-repo MADR-numbered ADRs.
- **`journal/`** — daily orchestration log; touch entries when shipping work in this repo.
- **`INBOX.md`** — things-to-act-on across all projects.
- **`wiki/projects-index.md`** — registry of every active repo and how it relates to this one.

Don't edit `personal-os/raw/` from a satellite — that's the central drop-zone, one-way.

## Project Overview

Official website for the Provenance iOS/tvOS multi-emulator app, built with Hugo static site generator. Hosted at https://provenance-emu.com via GitHub Pages.

## Build & Development Commands

```bash
# Local development server (requires Hugo installed)
hugo server
# Local dev server with drafts
hugo server --buildDrafts
# Production build (what CI runs)
hugo --minify
# Docker-based development (uses version from .env)
docker-compose up
# Full production-like build
hugo --gc --minify
```

Local dev server runs at http://localhost:1313/

## Deployment

Automated via GitHub Actions (`.github/workflows/gh-pages.yml`). Pushing to `main` triggers a build with Hugo extended (latest) and deploys to the `gh-pages` branch with CNAME `provenance-emu.com`. Pull requests get a build check but no deployment.

## Architecture

### Theme System

The site uses a **multi-theme chain** defined in `config.toml`:
```
theme = ["hugo-social-metadata", "hugo-redirect", "hugo-cloak-email", "small-apps-prov"]
```

- **`small-apps-prov`** — The primary custom theme (in `themes/small-apps-prov/`). All site layouts, partials, and SCSS live here.
- The other three themes are git submodules providing social metadata, URL redirects, and email obfuscation.
- `hugo-universal-theme` is also a submodule but is not in the active theme chain; it serves as a reference/base.

### Content is Data-Driven

The homepage and most static pages are **not built from Markdown content** — they are driven by YAML data files in `data/`:

- `data/homepage.yml` — Main homepage content (hero, features, systems list, download section, social proof, comparison table, carousel)
- `data/faq.yml`, `data/about.yml`, `data/contact.yml`, `data/privacy.yml`, `data/team.yml` — Page-specific data
- `data/plus.yml`, `data/press.yml` — Plus and Press page data
- `data/carousel/`, `data/features/`, `data/releases/` — Structured data for homepage sections

The homepage template that consumes this data is `themes/small-apps-prov/layouts/index.html` (~410 lines).

### Markdown Content Sections

Several sections use traditional Markdown with front matter:

- `content/blog/` — Blog posts (title, date, tags, author, image)
- `content/guides/` — How-to guide pages with `single.html` layout
- `content/compare/` — "Provenance vs" comparison pages with `single.html` layout
- `content/systems/` — System-specific landing pages (NES, SNES, GBA, PSX, etc.) with `single.html` layout

### Custom Styling

- `static/css/provenance-custom.css` — Site-wide custom CSS overrides (~510 lines), loaded as a plugin via `config.toml`
- Theme SCSS files in `themes/small-apps-prov/assets/scss/` — Core theme styles compiled by Hugo Pipes

### Key Layouts

All in `themes/small-apps-prov/layouts/`:
- `index.html` — Homepage (complex, data-driven, most editing happens here)
- `_default/baseof.html` — Base template wrapper
- `partials/head.html`, `header.html`, `footer.html` — Shared page structure
- `partials/jsonld.html` — JSON-LD structured data partial
- Page-specific layouts: `about/`, `product/`, `faq/`, `privacy/`, `contact/`, `team/`
- `plus/list.html`, `press/list.html` — Plus and Press pages (data-driven)
- `guides/list.html`, `guides/single.html` — How-to guide index and individual pages
- `compare/list.html`, `compare/single.html` — Comparison page index and individual pages
- `systems/list.html`, `systems/single.html` — System-specific landing page index and individual pages
- `layouts/donate/list.html` — Custom donate page (in root layouts dir, overrides theme)

### Configuration

`config.toml` controls: menus, social links, plugins (Bootstrap, jQuery, Owl Carousel, Fancybox, AOS animations), Disqus comments, Google Analytics, CTA section, and widget toggles. Many homepage sections (carousel, features, testimonials, clients, recent_posts) have enable/disable flags.

### Submodules

Clone with `--recursive` or run `git submodule update --init --recursive` after cloning. Required for themes to resolve.

### `_site/` Directory

`_site/` is a separate git worktree or checkout of another branch (not the main source). Do not edit files there — changes will not affect the main site build. The actual source files are at the repo root.

### `static/apps.json`

Auto-updated weekly by `.github/workflows/update-altstore-source.yml`, which pulls from GitHub Releases. Do not manually edit this file; it will be overwritten.

## ⚠️ Hard Rules — Do Not Change Without Understanding Why

### AOS CSS must be loaded synchronously
`themes/small-apps-prov/layouts/partials/head.html` loads `plugins/aos/aos.css` with a plain `<link rel="stylesheet">` — **never change this to async/preload**.

Why: AOS sets `opacity:0` on `[data-aos]` elements via CSS. If the CSS loads after `AOS.init()` runs (which happens when CSS is async), the opacity is never reset to 1 — elements become permanently invisible. This broke the status page and homepage multiple times. The Lighthouse performance gain from async-loading this one small CSS file (~3KB) is negligible.

### All `<script>` tags must have `data-cfasync="false"`
Every `<script>` in `footer.html` has `data-cfasync="false"`. This bypasses Cloudflare Rocket Loader, which rewrites script tags and breaks our deferred execution order. Do not remove these attributes.

### Do not add `data-aos` to functional/dashboard pages
The `/status/` page layout (`themes/small-apps-prov/layouts/status/list.html`) intentionally has no `data-aos` attributes. AOS animations are for marketing pages only — adding them to functional dashboards causes invisible content if timing is off.

## GitHub Issues & PR Conventions

### Epic Issues
Issues labeled `epic` are parent tracking issues that group multiple related PRs. They must **never** be auto-closed by a PR merge.

- **NEVER** use `Closes #N`, `Fixes #N`, or `Resolves #N` when referencing an epic issue in a PR description.
- **ALWAYS** use `Part of #N` or `Related to #N` when a PR addresses work from an epic.
- Child/sub-issues (individual tasks) CAN be closed by PRs using `Closes #N`.
- If you create a PR that fully completes all tasks in an epic, manually close the epic after human review — do not rely on keyword auto-close.

### PR Description Template
```
## Summary
- Brief bullets of what changed
## Part of
- Part of #N (epic title)
## Test plan
- [ ] Hugo builds without errors
- [ ] Page renders correctly at localhost:1313
# Development Preview: What's Coming Next
A lot has been happening in the `develop` branch lately. None of this is in the App Store yet — these features are still being polished — but we wanted to share what's in the pipeline so you know where the project is heading. No release date promises here, just an honest look at the work in progress.
If you want early access to these features, [Patreon supporters](https://www.patreon.com/provenance) get beta builds as they become available.
---
## 🎮 Cheat Code System
This is the biggest new feature in active development, and it's shaping up to be something genuinely useful rather than just a checkbox.
At the core is a **bundled 67MB libretro cheat database** shipped directly with the app — no internet required. Tap the search icon on any game and {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} looks up cheats via **MD5 hash matching** for exact ROM identification, or falls back to a fuzzy title match. You get the right cheats for your exact ROM version, completely offline.
For users who want the absolute latest codes, there's also **optional online lookup** from the libretro GitHub-hosted cheat database, with 24-hour disk caching and a globe icon to indicate when results are coming from the network vs. local storage. The online path is opt-in; the offline database works without any network access at all.
The cheat editor itself has been rebuilt in SwiftUI with **real-time format validation** — the input field goes green or red as you type, auto-formats your code to the expected layout, and shows format-specific hints. No more guessing whether your code is entered correctly.
Cheat support is landing across **11+ emulator cores**:
- Game Boy / GBC (Gambatte)
- Game Boy Advance (mGBA)
- Nintendo DS (melonDS)
- Nintendo 64 (Mupen64Plus)
- PlayStation (BeetlePSX, DuckStation)
- Genesis (Genesis Plus GX)
- 32X (PicoDrive)
- All RetroArch cores via a libretro cheat API bridge
Supported formats include Game Genie, Game Shark, Pro Action Replay, Code Breaker, Gecko, and Action Replay.
## 📺 Configurable CRT Shader Parameters
CRT shaders have been in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} for a while, but until now the settings were mostly fixed. A new settings UI with **sliders and toggles** lets you tune the visual effect in real time — adjustments feed directly into the Metal shaders as you move them, so you can dial things in visually instead of guessing.
**Simple CRT controls**: curvature, light boost, vignette, zoom, and brightness.
**Complex CRT controls**: bloom, scanlines, shadow mask, warp, and gamma — each individually toggleable and adjustable. Each section also has a reset-to-defaults button if you go too far.
---
## 🕹️ Custom Controller Button Remapping
Full button remapping is coming with proper profile support. You create **named controller profiles** with any button layout you want, then scope them to a specific controller vendor (DualSense, Xbox, MFi, Switch Pro), a specific system, or even a single game.
Priority works the way you'd expect: game-specific profiles override system-specific ones, which override the global default. Profiles apply automatically at game launch — no menu diving required every time you pick up a different controller.
---
## ⌨️ DOSBox: Keyboard and Mouse Support
Physical Bluetooth and USB keyboards now work in DOSBox games. Mouse movement tracking and left/right button support have been added as well.
This sounds small but it makes a real difference. Classic DOS games like Doom and Wing Commander are genuinely playable on iOS and tvOS now rather than being awkward workarounds. If you've got a Bluetooth keyboard handy, DOSBox games are finally worth loading up.
---
## 📖 In-App Controller Setup Guide
A new Controller Guide lives in Settings and also appears on the empty library screen. It walks through numbered pairing steps for DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox, MFi, and iCade controllers, so new users have a clear path to getting a controller connected without hunting through documentation.
On tvOS the guide uses focusable controller cards, and it includes a note for Siri Remote users encouraging them to pair a proper game controller before diving into anything that needs analog input.
---
## 🌐 Netplay (Groundwork Laid)
To be clear: **netplay is not ready, and we're not announcing a timeline**. But the work has begun.
The architecture has been designed and documented. We've audited 60+ RetroArch cores for netplay compatibility. The planned rollout is phased: first enable the `HAVE_NETPLAY` build flag across all RetroArch cores, then build out the lobby UI, then integrate native iOS networking.
The reason to mention it now is to be transparent about where we're heading. The groundwork is done. When it's ready, it'll be ready — and it's being built to be stable rather than rushed.
---
## 💿 CHD Support (A Quiet Differentiator)
This one already exists in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} but deserves more attention than it gets.
CHD (Compressed Hunks of Data) is MAME's disc image format — it compresses multi-track disc images for PS1, Saturn, PC-Engine CD, and other disc-based systems dramatically compared to raw BIN/CUE or ISO. Nearly all CD-based cores in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} support CHD, so this isn't unusual across the board.
What is unusual: **{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}'s native Mednafen core supports CHD via a custom implementation that doesn't exist in other standalone Mednafen forks**. Standard upstream Mednafen has no CHD support at all. Beetle (RetroArch's Mednafen-derived core) does — and {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} includes Beetle too — but if you're running the native Mednafen core for PS1, Saturn, or PC-Engine CD, CHD just works here in a way it won't in other standalone Mednafen ports.
The practical impact: your disc-based game library takes significantly less storage while preserving disc accuracy. If you're sitting on a pile of BIN/CUE rips, CHD is worth converting to.
## 💖 Support the Project
All of this work is happening because of community support. Development takes real time, and the features above represent hundreds of hours of work that hasn't shipped yet.
If you want to help keep things moving:
- **[Patreon](https://www.patreon.com/provenance)** — Monthly support with early access to beta builds
- **[Provenance Plus](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/provenance-app/id1596862805)** — Optional in-app purchase on App Store builds
- **[Buy Me a Coffee](https://buymeacoffee.com/joemattiello)** — One-time contributions
- **[Open Collective](https://opencollective.com/provenanceemu)** — Transparent community funding
Thank you for following along and for your patience while these features get finished properly.
# The Provenance Skin Catalog Is Live
We've launched a new community skin catalog at **[provenance-emu.com/skins/](https://provenance-emu.com/skins/)** — a searchable, browsable directory of controller skins for {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}, updated automatically from community GitHub repos.
## What It Is
The [Skin Catalog](https://provenance-emu.com/skins/) is an open-source directory of `.deltaskin` and `.manicskin` files compatible with {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}. Skins are indexed from the community automatically, with thumbnail previews extracted directly from the skin files themselves.
- **Browse** skins by system — GBA, SNES, PSX, N64, and more
- **Search** by name or author
- **Submit** your own skin in under a minute
The catalog powers the in-app skin browser (Settings → Skins → Browse Catalog), so anything you submit shows up right inside {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}.
## How to Submit a Skin
There are four ways to get your skin in the catalog:
1. **Drop a URL** — Go to [provenance-emu.com/skins/submit](https://provenance-emu.com/skins/submit) and paste any direct link to your `.deltaskin` or `.manicskin` file. The site parses the file in your browser and creates a GitHub issue pre-filled with your skin's metadata.
2. **Open a GitHub issue** — Visit [github.com/Provenance-Emu/skins/issues/new](https://github.com/Provenance-Emu/skins/issues/new/choose) and use the "Submit a Skin" template. Paste your download URL and it's automatically processed into the catalog.
3. **Pull request** — Fork [Provenance-Emu/skins](https://github.com/Provenance-Emu/skins), add a JSON file to the `skins/` directory, and open a PR. Automated validation runs on every PR.
4. **Register your repo** — If you maintain a GitHub repo full of skins, open a "Register Source" issue to have it crawled weekly. Your skins will be indexed automatically going forward.
## For Skin Creators
If you've been hosting skins on DeltaStyles, a personal GitHub repo, or anywhere else — you can bring them into the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} catalog without moving any files. The catalog just links to your existing download URL.
Want your whole repo crawled automatically? [Register it as a source](https://github.com/Provenance-Emu/skins/issues/new/choose).
## Under the Hood
The catalog is fully open source at [github.com/Provenance-Emu/skins](https://github.com/Provenance-Emu/skins). It:
- Crawls community repos weekly for new skins
- Extracts thumbnail images from inside skin ZIP files (PNG preferred, PDF converted to PNG via poppler)
- Stores thumbnails on GitHub Releases as a CDN, with repo fallback
- Rebuilds the catalog JSON on every change and deploys to GitHub Pages
- Validates all submissions via CI before they go live
The JSON catalog at `catalog.json` follows an open schema — if you want to build your own browser or integrate it into another app, go for it.
title: "Provenance vs Delta: Which iOS Emulator Is Right for You?"
date: 2026-03-05T00:00:00-05:00
---
Both {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} and Delta are free options for playing retro games on iPhone. They serve different audiences, and the right choice depends on what systems you want to play and what devices you own. This page lays out the facts so you can decide for yourself.
## Feature Comparison
| Feature | {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} | Delta |
|---|---|---|
| **Price** | Free (sideload or App Store); Plus is optional | Free (App Store or sideload via AltStore) |
| **Beta / early features** | Public releases | Early access via Patreon or AltStore+ subscription |
| **Platforms** | iOS, iPadOS, tvOS (Apple TV) | iOS, iPadOS |
| **Apple TV support** | Yes — native tvOS app with full native UI | No |
| **Systems supported** | 38+ (NES, SNES, N64, GBA, GBC, GB, DS, PS1, Saturn, Genesis, and many more) | 7 (NES, SNES, N64, GBA, GBC, GB, DS) |
| **PlayStation 1** | Yes | No |
| **Sega Genesis/Mega Drive** | Yes | No |
| **Atari systems** | Yes | No |
| **Open source** | Yes (MIT License) | No |
| **Controller support** | MFi, Xbox, PlayStation, Bluetooth | MFi, Xbox, PlayStation, Bluetooth |
| **Custom skins** | Yes | Yes |
| **Multiplayer (local)** | Yes | Yes |
| **Active development** | Yes | Yes |
## Where Delta Stands Out
Delta is focused exclusively on Nintendo systems and launched on the App Store in 2024. Its developer also created AltStore, so Delta integrates well with that sideloading ecosystem. For users who only need those seven Nintendo platforms, Delta provides a straightforward setup experience.
## Where Provenance Stands Out
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports 38+ systems, covering platforms Delta does not: PlayStation 1, Sega Genesis, Saturn, Atari, and many more. If you want to play beyond Nintendo's library, {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is the only option of the two.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} uses libretro cores that are actively maintained and updated from upstream, meaning you get newer emulation accuracy, broader compatibility, and more per-core configuration options. This translates to better game compatibility and more fine-grained control over emulation behavior versus bundled, less frequently updated cores.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is one of the very few emulators with a native tvOS app. RetroArch also supports tvOS, but uses a cross-platform non-native UI shared with desktop platforms — requiring manual menu navigation and file management for setup. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} provides a native Apple TV experience with Top Shelf extension, proper controller navigation, and no manual file wrangling. Being open source under the MIT license means the community can contribute, audit the code, and build on it.
## Summary
If you only need Delta's seven Nintendo systems, Delta is a functional free choice — though note that beta features and early builds require a Patreon or AltStore+ subscription. If you want broader system support — PlayStation, Sega, Atari, and 30+ more — a true native Apple TV experience, frequently updated libretro cores with more configuration options, or open source code, {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is the stronger fit.
There is no technical reason you cannot use both apps simultaneously.
## Try Provenance
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is free to download from the App Store, with no subscription required for core features.
---
title: "Provenance vs ManicEmu: Which iOS Emulator Is Right for You?"
date: 2026-03-05T00:00:00-05:00
---
ManicEmu is a newer iOS emulator that appeared on the App Store in 2024 alongside several other options following Apple's policy changes. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} has been around much longer and takes a different approach in terms of scope, pricing, and platform support. Here is a factual look at how they compare.
## Feature Comparison
| Feature | {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} | ManicEmu |
|---|---|---|
| **Price** | Free (sideload or App Store); Plus is optional | Free on App Store (premium features included); free to sideload |
| **Platforms** | iOS, iPadOS, tvOS (Apple TV) | iOS, iPadOS |
| **Apple TV support** | Yes — native tvOS app | No |
| **Systems supported** | 38+ systems | Multiple systems (Nintendo, SEGA, PlayStation) |
| **PlayStation 1** | Yes | Yes |
| **Sega Genesis/Mega Drive** | Yes | Yes |
| **Atari systems** | Yes | No |
| **Open source** | Yes (MIT License) | No (closed source) |
| **Controller support** | MFi, Xbox, PlayStation, Bluetooth | MFi, Xbox, PlayStation, Bluetooth |
| **Custom skins** | Yes | Yes |
| **Cheats** | Yes | Yes |
| **Save states** | Yes | Yes |
| **RetroAchievements** | Yes | Yes |
| **Core updates** | Frequent — tracks libretro upstream | Unknown (closed source) |
| **Per-core config options** | Extensive | Unknown (closed source) |
| **Active development** | Yes | Yes |
## Where ManicEmu Stands Out
ManicEmu is available directly on the App Store for free and can also be sideloaded at no cost. It supports a range of Nintendo and SEGA platforms and includes premium features without a paywall.
## Where Provenance Stands Out
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports 38+ systems including Atari platforms and several others that ManicEmu does not cover. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is free when sideloaded, and the App Store version has no mandatory subscription — {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} Plus is an optional add-on for extra features, not a paywall for basic emulation.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} uses libretro cores that are actively maintained and updated from upstream, giving you newer emulation accuracy, broader game compatibility, and extensive per-core configuration options. ManicEmu is closed source, so its core quality, update cadence, and compatibility coverage are not independently verifiable.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is open source under the MIT license — the code is publicly auditable and community-contributed. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is one of the few emulators with a native tvOS app. RetroArch also supports tvOS but uses a cross-platform non-native UI requiring manual menu diving and file management. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} provides a proper native Apple TV experience with Top Shelf extension and full controller navigation out of the box.
## Pricing Summary
- {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}: Free via sideloading (AltStore, Sideloadly, etc.); also available on the App Store for free with {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} Plus as an optional in-app purchase
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports games from 38+ retro systems, but you need to provide your own ROM files. This guide explains several methods for getting games into {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} on iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.
## What You Need
You will need ROM files for the games you want to play. You are responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to use any ROM files. A common legal approach is to dump ROMs from physical cartridges you own.
## Method 1: Import from the Files App (Easiest)
This is the most straightforward method on iOS 17+.
1. **Transfer your ROM files to your iPhone or iPad.** You can do this via AirDrop, iCloud Drive, a USB cable and the Files app on Mac, or any cloud storage app like Google Drive or Dropbox.
2. **Open the Files app** and locate your ROM file.
3. **Long-press the ROM file** and tap **Share**.
4. **Select {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}** from the share sheet. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} will open and automatically import the game into your library.
5. **Wait for the import to complete.** {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} will scan the file, identify the system, and add the game to your library with artwork if available.
## Method 2: WebDAV (Recommended for Bulk Transfers)
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} includes a built-in WebDAV server that lets you transfer multiple ROMs at once from a computer on the same network.
1. **Open {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} on your iPhone or iPad.**
2. **Go to Settings > Import/Export > WebDAV Server** and tap **Start WebDAV Server**. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} will show you an IP address and port number.
3. **On your Mac or PC**, open Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer (Windows). On Mac, press `Cmd+K` in Finder and enter `http://[IP address shown in Provenance]:[port shown in Provenance]/`. On Windows, map a network drive to the same address, including the port.
4. **Copy your ROM files** into the appropriate system folder in the WebDAV share.
5. **Stop the WebDAV server** in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} and return to the library. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} will scan and import the new files.
## Method 3: iTunes File Sharing
If you prefer a wired connection to a Mac or PC:
1. **Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer** with a USB cable.
2. **Open Finder on Mac** (or iTunes on Windows) and select your device.
3. **Go to the Files tab** and find {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} in the app list.
4. **Drag your ROM files** into the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} documents folder.
5. **Disconnect and open {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}.** The app will detect and import the new files.
## Method 4: Adding Games to Apple TV
Apple TV has a more restricted filesystem, so game management works differently.
1. **Add games using one of the methods above on your iPhone or iPad first.**
2. **Use the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} WebDAV server on iPhone/iPad** and access it from Apple TV via the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} tvOS app, if you have a shared library configured.
3. Alternatively, check the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} wiki for the latest recommended approach for Apple TV, as options may expand with new app versions.
## Tips
- {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} automatically identifies most ROMs and downloads artwork from an online database. If a game is not recognized, try renaming the file to match the official game title.
- BIOS files for certain systems (PlayStation, Sega Saturn, etc.) must be added separately. See the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} wiki for the full list of required BIOS files and where to place them.
- If a game does not appear after import, check that the file extension matches the expected format for that system.
title: "How to Play on Apple TV with Provenance"
date: 2026-03-05T00:00:00-05:00
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is one of the only iOS emulators with native Apple TV support, letting you play 38+ retro game systems on your television. This guide covers both the native tvOS app and using AirPlay to mirror from your iPhone or iPad.
## Option 1: Native tvOS App
The {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} tvOS app runs directly on Apple TV, giving you the best performance and lowest latency. This is the recommended approach for regular gaming sessions.
### Steps
1. **Install {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} on your Apple TV.** Open the App Store on your Apple TV, search for "{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}," and download it.
2. **Add games to {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}.** The easiest way is to use the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} app on your iPhone or iPad to add games, then use a shared library or WebDAV to sync them. You can also add ROMs via iTunes File Sharing from a Mac or PC.
3. **Pair a controller.** The Apple TV Siri Remote provides basic input but is not ideal for gaming. Pair a Bluetooth controller via **Apple TV Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth**. See our [controller setup guide](/guides/controller-setup/) for details.
4. **Launch {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} on Apple TV.** Open the app, navigate to your game library, and select a game to play.
5. **Adjust display settings if needed.** If the screen does not fill your TV, check your Apple TV display settings under **Settings > Video and Audio** and ensure the resolution matches your TV.
## Option 2: AirPlay from iPhone or iPad
If you prefer to run the game on your iPhone or iPad and stream the display to your TV, you can use AirPlay.
### Steps
1. **Connect your Apple TV and iPhone/iPad to the same Wi-Fi network.**
2. **Open Control Center on your iPhone or iPad.** Swipe down from the top-right corner (on Face ID devices) or up from the bottom (on older devices).
3. **Tap Screen Mirroring** and select your Apple TV from the list.
4. **Open {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} on your iPhone or iPad and launch a game.** The display will mirror to your TV in real time.
5. **Pair a controller to your iPhone or iPad** for a better gaming experience. See our [controller setup guide](/guides/controller-setup/).
## Tips
- For the best gaming experience on Apple TV, use the native tvOS app rather than AirPlay, which can introduce input lag over Wi-Fi.
- A wired Ethernet connection for your Apple TV will reduce any network-related issues.
- The SteelSeries Nimbus+ and Xbox Series X/S controllers are well-tested with the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} tvOS app.
- Volume can be adjusted using the Apple TV remote even while a game is running.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports a wide range of physical game controllers on both iOS and tvOS, giving you a much more authentic retro gaming experience. This guide walks you through connecting a controller and getting it working in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}.
## Supported Controllers
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} works with any MFi (Made for iPhone) certified controller and most Bluetooth controllers, including:
- **PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4** — pair via Bluetooth
- **Xbox Series X|S and Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controllers (e.g., Xbox One S)** — pair via Bluetooth
- **8BitDo controllers** — pair via Bluetooth (use MFi mode)
- **SteelSeries Nimbus+** and other MFi controllers
- **Apple TV Siri Remote** — limited input, works for basic navigation
## Steps
1. **Put your controller in pairing mode.** For PlayStation and Xbox controllers, hold the pairing button until the light flashes. For 8BitDo controllers, hold the pairing button and switch to MFi/iOS mode as described in the controller's manual.
2. **Open Settings on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.** Go to **Settings > Bluetooth** and ensure Bluetooth is turned on.
3. **Select your controller from the device list.** It should appear under "Other Devices." Tap it to pair. Once connected, it will move to the "My Devices" section.
4. **Open {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} and launch a game.** Your controller should be detected automatically. You do not need to configure anything inside {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} for standard button layouts.
5. **Access in-game settings if needed.** While a game is running, swipe down from the top of the screen (or press the Menu button on your controller) to access the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} overlay. From there you can adjust controller mappings under **Settings > Controllers**.
6. **Customize button mappings (optional).** In the {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} settings, navigate to **Controllers** to remap buttons for individual systems or globally.
## Tips
- If your controller is not detected, try toggling Bluetooth off and on, then re-pairing.
- On Apple TV, the Siri Remote serves as a secondary controller for Player 2 in some games.
- For the most reliable experience on Apple TV, use a controller with a strong MFi certification such as the SteelSeries Nimbus+.
- 8BitDo controllers must be in the correct pairing mode for iOS. Refer to your controller's manual for the exact button combination.
title: "How to Install Custom Controller Skins in Provenance"
date: 2026-03-13T00:00:00-05:00
tags: ["guide", "how-to", "skins"]
---
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports custom controller skins, letting you replace the default on-screen controls with community-created artwork that matches the original hardware. Hundreds of skins are available for free at the [Provenance Skin Catalog](https://provenance-emu.com/skins/).
## What Are Controller Skins?
Controller skins are themed overlays for the on-screen button layout that appears when playing without a physical controller. A skin defines the layout, button positions, and artwork for a specific system. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} uses the open `.deltaskin` and `.manicskin` file formats — the same formats used by Delta and Manic, so a large back-catalog of skins works out of the box.
## Find a Skin
**[Browse the Provenance Skin Catalog →](https://provenance-emu.com/skins/)**
The catalog is searchable by system (GBA, SNES, PlayStation, etc.) with thumbnail previews. You can also find skins on:
- The [Provenance Discord](https://discord.gg/4TK7PU5) — `#skins` channel
- [DeltaStyles.com](https://deltastyles.com) — Delta skins are fully compatible with {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}
- GitHub repositories — search for `.deltaskin` or `.manicskin` files
## Install a Skin
### Option 1 — Download directly on iPhone/iPad (easiest)
1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the [Skin Catalog](https://provenance-emu.com/skins/) in Safari.
2. Tap any skin card, then tap **⬇ Download**.
3. iOS will ask which app to open the file with — choose {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}.
4. The skin is imported automatically and ready to use.
### Option 2 — Import via the Files app
1. Download the `.deltaskin` or `.manicskin` file to your Files app (Downloads folder).
2. Open {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} and go to **Settings → Skins**.
3. Tap **Import Skin** (the `+` or import button) to open the Files picker.
4. Navigate to your downloaded file and select it.
5. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} imports and validates the skin.
### Option 3 — Share from another app
If a skin was sent to you via Discord, Messages, or another app:
1. Tap and hold the file, then tap **Share**.
2. Select {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} from the share sheet.
3. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} opens and imports the skin immediately.
## Activate a Skin
After importing, activate the skin for a system:
1. Go to **Settings → Skins**.
2. Select the system you want to customize (e.g. Game Boy Advance).
3. Tap the skin you imported and tap **Use This Skin**.
4. Launch any game for that system — the skin will be active.
## Tips
- Skins are **system-specific** — a GBA skin won't work for SNES. Check the system tag before downloading.
- **iPad skins** often have landscape-optimized layouts. Look for skins tagged `ipad` or `landscape`.
- The **Skin Catalog** automatically extracts thumbnails from skin files, so what you see in the preview is what you get.
- Want to **make your own skin**? The format is documented at [wiki.provenance-emu.com](https://wiki.provenance-emu.com/info/skins-guide).
- **Submit your skin** to the community catalog at [provenance-emu.com/skins/submit.html](https://provenance-emu.com/skins/submit.html).
system: "Nintendo 3DS"
shortName: "3DS"
supportedFormats: ".3ds, .cia, .cxi, .app, .ncsd, .ncch"
---
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} brings the Nintendo 3DS to iPhone and iPad through the Azahar (formerly Citra) emulation core. The 3DS library spans nearly a decade of outstanding handheld gaming — Pokémon X/Y/Sun/Moon, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Fates, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and hundreds more.
## Supported File Formats
- `.3ds` — Standard 3DS ROM format (most common)
## Encryption Note
Many 3DS ROMs are encrypted. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} requires decrypted ROMs or proper AES keys to run encrypted titles. See the [wiki](https://wiki.provenance-emu.com/info/system-guides/3ds) for setup details.
## Features
- **Azahar Core** — Derived from Citra, offering broad 3DS game compatibility
- **Save States** — Snapshot support independent of in-game saves
- **Controller Support** — Full analog stick and button support via MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers
- **Circle Pad Support** — Full analog input mapping including the Circle Pad Pro buttons
title: "Play Atari 2600 Games on iPhone | Provenance"
date: 2024-03-05
system: "Atari 2600"
shortName: "Atari 2600 / VCS"
supportedFormats: ".a26, .bin, .rom"
---
The Atari 2600 — originally sold as the Video Computer System — launched in 1977 and brought arcade gaming into living rooms for the first time. Its library of Pitfall!, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Asteroids, and Combat defined early home gaming. With {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}, you can play the entire 2600 catalog on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is free, open-source, and available directly from the App Store. No jailbreak required.
## Supported File Formats
Atari 2600 ROM files are small by modern standards. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports all common formats:
- `.a26` — The dedicated Atari 2600 ROM extension
- `.bin` — Generic binary format; the most common format for 2600 dumps
- `.rom` — Alternate ROM extension used by some archiving tools
Because Atari 2600 cartridges were so small — most are under 32KB — entire libraries take up a fraction of modern storage.
## Features
Playing Atari 2600 games in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} gives you access to the full suite of emulator features:
- **Save States** — Save at any point; most 2600 games had no native save functionality, making this essential for longer sessions
- **Controller Support** — Full MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controller compatibility; the simple 2600 joystick maps naturally to a single analog stick and button
- **Shader Support** — CRT scanline and phosphor filters to recreate the warm, blurry look of playing on a 1970s television
- **Cheat Codes** — Code support for supported titles
- **Fast Forward** — Accelerate through slower sections
- **On-Screen Controls** — Customizable touch overlay for playing without a physical controller
## iCloud Sync with Provenance Plus
[Provenance Plus](/plus/) adds iCloud sync for your Atari 2600 save states and game library. Your progress and high scores stay consistent whether you're playing on your iPhone or Apple TV.
## How to Get Started
1. **Download {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}** from the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/provenance-app/id1596862805) — it's free.
2. **Add your Atari 2600 ROM files** to {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} using iTunes File Sharing, the Files app, or a web server import.
3. **Start playing** — your game library appears automatically once files are imported.
date: 2024-03-05
system: "Sega Dreamcast"
shortName: "Dreamcast / DC"
supportedFormats: ".cdi, .gdi, .chd, .iso"
---
Sega's Dreamcast was ahead of its time — online multiplayer, VMU memory cards, and an exceptional software library that included Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Soul Calibur. Though the hardware was discontinued in 2001, the games hold up remarkably well. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} brings the Dreamcast to your iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is free, open-source, and available directly from the App Store. No jailbreak required.
{{< family-app app="ifly" text="Want a dedicated Dreamcast app? iFly is our standalone Flycast-based emulator." compare="https://ifly-emu.com/compare/ifly-vs-provenance/" >}}
## Supported File Formats
Dreamcast games were GD-ROM disc-based. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports the standard Dreamcast disc image formats:
- `.gdi` — GD-ROM Disc Image format; the most accurate representation of Dreamcast discs, typically paired with `.bin` track files in the same directory
- `.cdi` — DiscJuggler image format; widely used for Dreamcast backups
- `.chd` — Compressed Hunks of Data format; significantly reduces file sizes while maintaining full compatibility
- `.iso` — Standard disc image format for compatible releases
CHD is the recommended format for a Dreamcast library — Dreamcast games are large, and CHD compression makes them much more practical to store on a mobile device.
## Features
Playing Dreamcast games in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} gives you access to the full suite of emulator features:
- **Save States** — Save anywhere, supplementing the Dreamcast's own VMU save system
- **VMU Emulation** — Virtual Memory Unit support for games that use the Dreamcast's built-in save functionality
- **Controller Support** — Full analog stick and trigger support via MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers, closely matching the Dreamcast controller layout; on-screen touch controls also available
- **Shader Support** — CRT filters and upscaling options that make Dreamcast's distinctive art style shine on Retina displays
- **Cheat Codes** — Code support for Dreamcast titles
- **Fast Forward** — Skip loading screens or speed through slower sections
## iCloud Sync with Provenance Plus
[Provenance Plus](/plus/) adds iCloud sync for your Dreamcast save states, so your Shenmue chapter progress and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 unlocks are automatically backed up and available across all your devices.
## How to Get Started
1. **Download {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}** from the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/provenance-app/id1596862805) — it's free.
2. **Add your Dreamcast disc image files** via iTunes File Sharing, the Files app, or web import. For GDI images, keep all associated track files in the same folder.
3. **Start playing** — {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} will detect your Dreamcast titles automatically.
The SNK Neo Geo was legendary for bringing true arcade hardware home in 1990. title: "Play PlayStation 2 Games on iPhone & iPad | Provenance"
date: 2024-03-05
system: "PlayStation 2"
shortName: "PS2"
supportedFormats: ".iso, .bin/.cue, .chd"
---
The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console ever made, and its library holds some of the greatest games ever created. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} brings PS2 emulation to iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV — letting you play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, and hundreds of other titles on your Apple device.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is free, open-source, and available directly from the App Store. No jailbreak required.
## Supported File Formats
PlayStation 2 games were disc-based. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports the most common PS2 disc image formats:
- `.iso` — Standard disc image format, the most widely used format for PS2 backups
- `.bin` / `.cue` — Common disc dump format; keep both files in the same directory
- `.chd` — Compressed Hunks of Data format; significantly reduces file sizes without sacrificing compatibility
CHD is recommended for large PS2 libraries — PS2 games can be several gigabytes each, and CHD compression makes storage much more manageable on a mobile device.
## Features
- **Save States** — Save anywhere, at any point in a game, not just at in-game memory card screens
- **Memory Card Emulation** — Virtual memory card support for games that use the PS2's standard save system
- **Controller Support** — Full analog stick and trigger support via MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers; on-screen controls for touchscreen play
- **Shader Support** — Visual filters including upscaling options that make PS2-era graphics look sharper on modern Retina displays
- **Cheat Codes** — Code support for PS2 titles
- **Fast Forward** — Skip loading sequences or accelerate through slower sections
## Performance Note
PS2 emulation is computationally demanding. For the best experience, an iPhone 12 or newer (or equivalent iPad) is recommended. Older devices may experience reduced performance on graphically intensive titles.
## iCloud Sync with Provenance Plus
title: "Play PSP Games on iPhone & iPad | Provenance"
date: 2024-03-05
system: "PlayStation Portable"
shortName: "PSP"
supportedFormats: ".iso, .cso, .pbp"
---
Sony's PlayStation Portable was a technical marvel when it launched in 2005, bringing near-PlayStation 2-quality gaming to a handheld. With {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}, you can bring that library to your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV — playing God of War: Chains of Olympus, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Persona 3 Portable, and dozens of other standout PSP titles.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is free, open-source, and available directly from the App Store with no jailbreak required.
## Supported File Formats
PSP games are distributed as disc images or compressed archives. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports the primary PSP formats:
- `.iso` — Standard UMD disc image, the most common format for PSP backups
- `.cso` — Compressed ISO format; reduces file sizes significantly while remaining broadly compatible
- `.pbp` — PlayStation Portable executable package format, used for digital and download releases
CSO compression is a practical choice for PSP games, which tend to be large and benefit from the space savings on mobile storage.
## Features
Playing PSP games in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} gives you access to the full suite of emulator features:
- **Save States** — Save at any moment, supplementing the PSP's own save system for extra flexibility
- **Controller Support** — Full analog stick support via MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers, closely matching the PSP's original control layout; on-screen touch controls also available
- **Shader Support** — Visual filters and upscaling options to enhance PSP graphics on modern high-resolution displays
- **Cheat Codes** — Cheat code support for PSP titles
- **Fast Forward** — Speed through cutscenes or slower segments
- **On-Screen Controls** — Customizable touch overlay for playing without a physical controller
## iCloud Sync with Provenance Plus
[Provenance Plus](/plus/) adds iCloud sync for your PSP save states and game library. Whether you're deep into a Monster Hunter campaign or midway through a Crisis Core playthrough, Plus keeps your progress synced across every device automatically.
## How to Get Started
2. **Add your PSP game files** to {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} using iTunes File Sharing, the Files app, or a web server import.
3. **Start playing** — your PSP library appears automatically once files are imported.
date: 2024-03-05
system: "PlayStation"
shortName: "PS1 / PSX"
supportedFormats: ".bin/.cue, .iso, .img, .pbp, .chd"
---
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} brings Sony's original PlayStation to iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. The PS1 era produced some of the most iconic games in history — Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and hundreds more — and {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} lets you play them all on your Apple device for free.
Available directly from the App Store, {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is open-source and requires no jailbreak. Just add your own PlayStation disc images and start playing.
## Supported File Formats
PlayStation games were disc-based, so {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports several disc image formats:
- `.bin` / `.cue` — The most common PS1 dump format; keep both files together
- `.iso` — Standard disc image format
- `.img` — Alternate disc image format
- `.pbp` — PSP-style compressed PlayStation archives
- `.chd` — Compressed Hunks of Data format, greatly reduces file size while preserving disc accuracy
For multi-disc games, {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} handles disc switching so you can continue your save across discs.
## Features
- **Save States** — Save anywhere, not just at in-game memory card screens
- **Memory Card Emulation** — Virtual memory card support for games that use the PS1's built-in save system
- **Controller Support** — Full DualShock-style analog support via MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controllers; on-screen controls for touchscreen play
- **Shader Support** — Apply CRT filters to replicate the visual style of original PlayStation hardware
- **Cheat Codes** — GameShark code support for PS1 titles
- **Fast Forward** — Skip cutscenes or accelerate through slower sections
## iCloud Sync with Provenance Plus
[Provenance Plus](/plus/) adds iCloud sync for your PlayStation save states, so your progress on a long RPG is automatically backed up and available across all your devices.
title: "Play Sega Saturn Games on iPhone | Provenance"
date: 2024-03-05
system: "Sega Saturn"
shortName: "Saturn"
supportedFormats: ".bin/.cue, .iso, .chd"
---
The Sega Saturn was a cult classic — complex hardware that most developers struggled with, but that gave rise to some genuinely extraordinary games. Nights into Dreams, Virtua Fighter 2, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and the Japan-only port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night all found their home on Saturn. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} brings this rare library to your iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} is free, open-source, and available directly from the App Store. No jailbreak required.
## Supported File Formats
Saturn games were CD-ROM based. {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} supports the standard Saturn disc image formats:
- `.bin` / `.cue` — The most common Saturn dump format; keep both files in the same directory when importing
- `.iso` — Standard disc image format compatible with many Saturn releases
- `.chd` — Compressed Hunks of Data format; highly recommended for Saturn libraries due to the space savings on large disc collections
Multi-disc Saturn games are supported, with disc-switching handled within the emulator.
## Features
Playing Sega Saturn games in {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} gives you access to the full suite of emulator features:
- **Save States** — Save at any point; especially valuable for the Saturn's longer RPGs and adventure games
- **Controller Support** — Full MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controller compatibility; the Saturn's 6-button layout maps well to modern controllers for fighting games like Virtua Fighter
- **Shader Support** — CRT scanline and visual filters to replicate the look of Saturn games on period-accurate hardware
- **Cheat Codes** — Code support for Saturn titles
- **Fast Forward** — Speed through loading sequences, which were notoriously slow on Saturn hardware
- **On-Screen Controls** — Customizable touch overlay for playing without a physical controller
## iCloud Sync with Provenance Plus
[Provenance Plus](/plus/) adds iCloud sync for your Saturn save states, keeping your Panzer Dragoon Saga progress and Virtua Fighter records backed up and accessible across all your Apple devices automatically.
## How to Get Started
1. **Download {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}** from the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/provenance-app/id1596862805) — it's free.
2. **Add your Saturn disc image files** via iTunes File Sharing, the Files app, or web import. For `.bin`/`.cue` files, import both together.
3. **Start playing** — {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} will detect your Sega Saturn titles automatically.
title: "Play Virtual Boy Games on iPhone | Provenance"
date: 2026-03-13
system: "Nintendo Virtual Boy"
shortName: "Virtual Boy"
supportedFormats: ".vb, .vboy"
---
The Nintendo Virtual Boy was Nintendo's bold and ill-fated 1995 experiment with stereoscopic 3D — a table-top headset that displayed red monochrome graphics in two viewports to create depth. It sold poorly and was discontinued within a year, producing only 22 commercial games. That rarity makes the library a fascinating collector's target, and titles like Wario Land and Galactic Pinball hold up as genuinely good games.
{{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}} emulates the Virtual Boy through the Mednafen core, displaying the iconic red-on-black graphics on your iPhone screen.
## Supported File Formats
- `.vb` — Standard Virtual Boy ROM format
- `.vboy` — Alternative Virtual Boy ROM extension
## Features
- **Mednafen Core** — Accurate Virtual Boy emulation covering the full commercial library
- **Display Modes** — Red/black classic display or colorized modes for easier viewing
- **Save States** — Snapshot and restore at any point
- **Controller Support** — Full MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation wireless controller support with proper D-Pad support for the Virtual Boy's dual D-pad layout
## iCloud Sync with Provenance Plus
[Provenance Plus](/plus/) syncs your Virtual Boy save states and library across all your Apple devices via iCloud.
## How to Get Started
1. **Download {{< brand >}}Provenance{{< /brand >}}** from the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/provenance-app/id1596862805) — it's free.
2. **Add your Virtual Boy ROM files** via the Files app or Wi-Fi import.
        answer: "Provenance is actively developed and new system support is added over time. Follow the project on GitHub and join the Discord community to stay up to date on new releases."
  - title: "ROMs & Game Files"
    faqList:
      - question: "Where do I get ROMs?"
        answer: "You must supply your own ROM files obtained from cartridges or discs you legally own. Provenance does not distribute or host ROM files."
      - question: "What file formats does Provenance support?"
        answer: "Provenance supports standard ROM formats for each system — for example, .smc and .sfc for SNES, .z64 for N64, .gba for Game Boy Advance, .bin/.cue or .iso for PlayStation, and .md/.gen for Sega Genesis. Compressed .zip files are also supported for most systems."
      - question: "How do I add games to Provenance?"
        answer: "You can import games via iTunes File Sharing, the Files app, a local Wi-Fi web server built into Provenance, or cloud storage services. On Apple TV, use the companion iOS app to transfer files."
  - title: "Controllers & Input"
    faqList:
      - question: "What controllers work with Provenance?"
        answer: "Provenance supports MFi (Made for iPhone) controllers, Xbox controllers, PlayStation (DualShock/DualSense) controllers, and other Bluetooth gamepads. On-screen controls are also available."
      - question: "Can I use a keyboard or mouse?"
        answer: "Keyboard input is supported on devices running iPadOS. Mouse and trackpad input support depends on the emulated system."
      - question: "Does Provenance support multiplayer?"
        answer: "Yes. Local multiplayer is supported for systems that offered it. Connect multiple controllers to play with friends."
  - title: "Provenance Plus"
    faqList:
      - question: "What is Provenance Plus?"
        answer: "Provenance Plus is an optional in-app purchase that unlocks additional features such as enhanced themes, advanced settings, and extra customization options. The core emulation experience is fully free without it."
      - question: "Is Provenance Plus a subscription?"
        answer: "No. Provenance Plus is a one-time purchase, not a recurring subscription. You pay once and keep access to the Plus features."
      - question: "Do I need Provenance Plus to play games?"
        answer: "No. All core emulation features — playing games, save states, controller support, all supported systems — are available for free. Provenance Plus is optional and adds extra features on top."
